Home of the seat of government of the United States. Traveling down Constitution, Pennsylvania and other main roads is an awe-inspiring experience. From the U.S. Capital to The White House to the Supreme Court one is only amazed at the minds of the founding fathers who sought a balance of power in the federal government.
Named after George Washington and founded in 1791 and was for a time called the District of Columbia. In 1871 Congress consolidated the city of Washington, Georgetown and all the other unincorporated areas in the district under a single municipal government. Now just Washington D.C. or simply D.C. or some just call it Metro DC.
Congress has supreme authority over the district even though it has a mayor and 13 counsel members. Congress can also overturn any local laws. One can only imagine how much talk goes around about that process.
It has been said the opinions in Washington are as varied as the cherry blossoms. Yes, there are a lot of opinions in this town. However, the one thing most will agree on is that during the week over one million people are in D.C., from commuters to residents statesman, diplomats and more. Home of the “First Family” and many federal employees, D.C. is always on the move.
