Memphis was occupied by The Chickasaw Indian Tribe for thousands of years. They sold a piece of land to the Spanish for a fort in 1795 so the Spanish could control navigation on the Mississippi river. Memphis was founded in 1819 by John Overton, James Winchester and Andrew Jackson and named after the ancient capital of Egypt, Memphis.
Memphis grew and developed as a transportation center in the 19th century because of its flood-free location, high above the Mississippi River. Yellow fever devastated the population in the 1870s. This made Memphis unable to pay it’s debts. So it lost it’s city charter. Regaining it in 1893, Memphis was back. It was the largest spot in the world in three areas: Cotton, hardwood lumber and mules.
Mississippi delta residents converged on Memphis with their unique music genre, the blues. These blues artists, like from Indianola, Mississippi have continued with the soul stirring music that have won too many awards to mention.
Memphis had a population of 652,717 in 2016 and continues to be Known as part of the “Mid-South”, it’s music helped shape many of the artists of the 20th century. BB King and many other famous musicians often play on Beale Street. The Beale Street Music Festival is a must attend event every May. The Blues genre has deep roots in Memphis. The cooking is mouth watering. The meals are very tasty and served with southern hospitality.
