Los Angeles … Home to native Americans for thousands of years, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo claimed southern California for Spain in 1542. In 1771, Franciscan friar Junipero Serra built Mission San Gabriel Archangel, the first mission in the area.
On September 4, 1781, 44 residents founded the pueblo called “La Reyna de los Angeles” which means Our Lady the Queen of the Angels. Two-thirds of them were mestizo or mulatto.
Today the pueblo is commemorated in the historic district of Los Angeles Pueblo Plaza and Olvera, the oldest part of the city of angels, Los Angeles.
1820 saw the city of angels, Los Angeles grow to 650 residents. Los Angeles was incorporated as a city on April 4, 1850. By 1900 there were 102, 000 residents.
The Los Angeles Aqueduct of 1913 by William Mulholland help spur more growth. 1910 saw 10 movie companies turning out movies. One-quarter of the world’s oil output came from Los Angeles in 1923.
By 1930 the population exceeded one million. 1969 gave birth to one of the birth places of the internet (ARPANET), Los Angeles.
Los Angeles, with a U.S. Census-estimated 2016 population of 3,976,322, has seen a lot of growth in recent years.
Especially has there been major changes to the landscape and it’s people. Overlooking the pacific ocean, mountains, and the deserts to the east makes Los Angeles a very important region. With the Lakers and the Clippers calling the Staples Center home, the residents have plenty of basketball to excite them. Not to mention the long line of great players who have worn those uniforms.
“The Movie Capital of the World” has produced film and music that has shaped the modern world. Millions of hours have gone into producing music and film like no other place on earth.
Home of Hollywood and much more, brings people there from all over the world. With this spirit of giving, the city of angels has produced merchants who understand the spirit of giving just as Friar Serra back in 1771.
